Port of Oulu Accelerates Green Transition
The Port of Oulu is preparing for significant green transition investments that will strengthen the region’s position as a hub for sustainable energy production and synthetic fuels.
The port’s updated master plan outlines developments through 2040, with the most notable changes driven by the emerging hydrogen economy. New port areas in Oritkari and the existing Vihreäsaari site will be zoned for chemical industry use. Key infrastructure upgrades include 400 kV substations and new quays to support future operations.
Oritkari: A Growing Hydrogen Economy Hub
Earlier this year, French energy company Verso Energy secured a plot in Oritkari for a new plant dedicated to hydrogen and synthetic fuel production. The Port of Oulu’s TEN-T core network status and strong logistical connections were decisive factors in attracting the investment.
Verso Energy’s synthetic fuel technology combines renewable hydrogen with captured carbon dioxide from industrial sources such as pulp and paper mills. These fuels are designed for use in both aviation and maritime sectors, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional fuels.
Vihreäsaari: Hy2Gen’s E-Methanol Plant for Shipping
German company Hy2Gen Nordic AS is planning a 200-megawatt e-methanol facility in Vihreäsaari to serve the maritime industry. Once operational, this plant would position Oulu as the largest synthetic fuel production center in the Baltic Sea region, based on announced projects.
Synthetic fuels produced with renewable electricity, hydrogen from water, and captured carbon dioxide are fully compatible with existing engines in cars and ships. They represent a critical solution for reducing emissions across transportation sectors.
The City of Oulu’s Urban Planning Committee approved a planning reservation for the new hydrogen plant in Vihreäsaari on November 25, 2025, enabling detailed design work to begin. The investment decision will follow at a later stage.
