The Port of Oulu is the part of the EcoPorts association
EcoPorts is an environmental initiative of the European port sector. It was launched in 1997 by several environmentally proactive ports and has been integrated into the European Sea Ports Organization (ESPO) since 2011.
The general principle of EcoPorts is to increase awareness of environmental protection through cooperation and information sharing between ports and to improve environmental management.
EcoPorts offers ports a self-assessment method (SDM) that allows port operators to evaluate the performance of the port’s environmental management program in relation to the requirements of industry and international standards.
The Port of Oulu has been part of the EcoPorts association since 2018. The SDM self-evaluation is done every two years, and in Oulu the latest evaluation was done in April 2024. There are a total of 90 EcoPorts members in the European port network, and among them are 53 ISO-certified ports. The Port of Oulu also belongs to the ISO-certified group.
The Port of Oulu has had an ISO 14001 environmental system for a quarter of a century. This initiative is an important step towards more environmentally friendly port operations and cooperation to promote environmental issues.
